Workshops
José Siphioni teaches three workshops at his studio in Alvados. Each one shows a different side of working with clay: shaping it on the wheel, and two old, open ways of firing it. The workshops are for all levels, and beginners are welcome.
The workshops

Introduction to the potter's wheel
- Duration: about 2 hours
- Minimum participants: from 2 people
Knead, centre and throw your first pieces on the wheel. Beginners are welcome.
How the workshop runs:
- A short introduction to the potter’s wheel and how it works.
- Preparing the clay and the tools.
- Kneading, centring and throwing your own pieces on the wheel.
Your pieces need time to dry after the workshop. If you would like to keep them, the potter fires them afterwards. You can collect them at the studio, or we can send them to any country. Shipping costs depend on the size and packaging of your pieces.

Raku firing
- Duration: about 4 hours
- Minimum participants: {{TODO: Mindestteilnehmer}}
Fire glazed pieces in a gas kiln, then let leaves from the garden smoke-colour the bare clay. Your pieces are finished the same day.
In raku, the pieces come out of the kiln while they are still glowing, at around 1,000 °C. They go straight onto wood, leaves and shavings. The flames and the lack of oxygen leave marks on the clay that no one can plan – every piece is different.
How the workshop runs:
- An introduction to the raku technique.
- Glazing the pieces.
- Preparing and setting up the kiln.
- The firings.
You take your pieces home on the same day.

Paper kiln
- Duration: about 6 hours
- Minimum participants: {{TODO: Mindestteilnehmer}}
Build an open-air kiln from newspaper, clay and wood, and fire in it – close to how pottery was fired thousands of years ago.
The paper kiln is one of the oldest ways to fire pottery. You build it yourself from newspaper, clay and wood, and you control the fire and the air that goes in and out. Inside, it can reach between 700 °C and 1,200 °C. The direct contact with the flames gives each piece marks that cannot be repeated.
How the workshop runs:
- Start at 10 am with an introduction to the paper kiln.
- A walk nearby to collect mud and natural materials to decorate the pieces.
- Decorating the pieces.
- Loading the pieces and building the kiln.
- The firing.
- Opening the kiln.
Sometimes the firing takes longer than the six hours of the workshop. You do not have to stay until the end. After the firing, the pieces need at least four hours to cool down before you can take them home.
